The celebrations that marked the 125th birth anniversary of AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada were attended by many guests of honor. Srila Prabhupada, who passed away in 1977, founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also in Guyana knows as the Hare Krishna Movement. On this date in 1965, at the age of sixty-nine, Srila Prabhupada left India on a steamship bound for the United States, with the intention of bringing the teachings of Krishna and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to the English-speaking world. With him was a trunk full of his translations and commentary on the First Canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, and about forty rupees in cash.
Last weekend devotees celebrated the 50th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s 1971 vist to Gainesville, Florida, as well as his 125th birth anniversary with a three-day festival. Rationing of food, defeat in France, the nightly ‘blackouts’ and enemy bombing raids, the Battle of Britain, the Blitz – all were shortly to come. Britain would not be the same for many years.
A Shower of Divine Compassion, a book of Srila Prabhupada’s poetry, was released by BBT India in March this year on the auspicious occasion of Gaura Purnima. The book features eight poems written between 1930 and 1965.
It is December of 1936. Abhaya Caraṇāravinda Dāsa, a forty-year-old pharmaceutical distributor then in Bombay on business, feels a sudden impulse to write a letter to his spiritual master, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura. It is December 9, 1968, thirty-two years later. The same disciple—now a renunciant and spiritual master himself—finds himself in the city of Los Angeles where he relates to a gathering of his own disciples the story of his 1936 letter. He is observing with them the “Disappearance Day” of his spiritual master.

On 19 September 1965, when Srila Prabhupada had arrived for the first time in USA and exited the Jaladuta steamship at the Brooklyn pier, one of his contacts in the new land was Gopal Agarwal, the son of a Mathura businessman who had requested his son to host Prabhupada to America. This week, Gopal Agarwal, who resides in USA, and his son Brij spent a couple of days in ISKCON Juhu, Mumbai.
P.L. Sethi, a building contractor who assisted Srila Prabhupada in acquiring and building ISKCON’s Juhu temple, passed away on February 16 in Mumbai, India. He was 88. Although he was never officially initiated into ISKCON, Sethi always regarded Prabhupada as his guru. Not so long ago, I read a magazine that arrived in my letterbox. I had an hour to spare during my daughter's Indian dance class and wanted to study its pages so that I could properly reply to the sender. Back to Prabhupada was sent to me by someone who espouses the ritvik doctrine, the conclusion that since Srila Prabhupada is the spiritual master of every ISKCON member, that consequently there should be no other initiations or gurus.
